Message from Chair
In 2009, we as a board never imagined that one day VEPA would be a fully functioning organisation. It would become accountable and active. We remember the days. Peace Corps volunteer Saskia approached two of our now board members. She asked if we supported the idea.
In 2009, we gathered the committed people of Vava’u. We sat together and agreed on the concept to create VEPA. Our goal was to protect the environment for the benefit of people. We envisioned organizing clean ups and occasional events. However, many of us didn’t foresee the journey and success that VEPA has had in the 12 years of operation.
The environment plays a leading and strong role in their livelihoods and future. The VEPA board, the team, and the people of Tonga reached a collective agreement for this.
The challenges are many and need commitments beyond what VEPA alone can set up. However, through strategic partnerships and support for good governance, we really believe in the future path ahead.
