Message from Chair
In 2009, we as a board never imagined that one day VEPA would be a fully functioning, accountable and active organisation. We remember the days when Peace Corps volunteer Saskia approached 2 of our now board members and asked if we supported the idea.
We pulled together committed people of Vava’u in 2009 and sat together agreeing to the concept to create VEPA with the goal of protecting the environment for the benefit of people. We envisioned organizing clean ups and occasional events, but never did many of us envisage the journey and success that VEPA has had in the 12 years of operation.
It’s because of the collective agreement not only by VEPA board and team but by the people of Tonga that the environment plays a leading and strong role in their livelihoods and future.
The challenges are many and need commitments beyond what VEPA can establish, but through strategic partnerships and support for good governance, we really believe in the future path ahead.
